728 BED CONDITIONER

Released onto the Australian market in 2001, it has been a great success with foresters concerned about bed quality, costs, planting efficiency and the effectiveness of herbicide applications.

A 728 Bed Conditioner with 750 Bed Former attachment, fitted to a 100hp wheel tractor, makes short work of these huge clods on a high-production site in Northern Tasmania. Working over the site after only a few weeks weathering, note the excellent tilth and shape of the bed in the foreground.

Heavy clods, thick grass, poor bed condition ~ all can be adequately addressed with a little bit of time and the use of this new implement, and at high working speeds too.
Operators have told us that costs are less than half that of second-bedding with a Savannah plow and a whole lot less than using a rotary hoe.

With stump-jump release on each disk gang, the 728 Bed Conditioner can be operated safely at very high working speeds. The 'floating' Bed Former attachment shown here, can be used independently of the Bed Conditioner on sites with no grass in the clods, but is best used in conjunction with the Bed Conditioner.

Report from STY Afforestation , Beaufort, Vic.

Working behind a Cat Challenger tractor, we were able to cover an average of 7 hectares per hour, which compares very favourable with using a Lely Roterra, which can only cover 4 hectares per hour.

The beauty of the Bed Conditioner is the lack of moving parts and the much lower maintenance costs when working in rocky paddocks.

Reports back from Tree Planting Contractors were all positive, with all of them stating that we had the best prepared sites that they had ever planted into. Weed control was better also, as there was a better prepared bed for chemicals to work on.

Peter Wyllie, STY Operations manager, concludes by saying that the Bed Conditioner performed very well under most conditions. The only exception being on very wet soil late in the season and in these conditions the Roterras they had been using also performed very poorly.
